The Age Old Game of Strategic Deployment

There are very few games that have the same kind of staying power as chess. The classic battle of wits may have its origins rooted in warfare, but it has since gone on to capture the imagination of children and adults all around the world. You can't even compare checkers to chess, because they are leagues apart in terms of sophistication and strategy.

Are you having trouble finding someone to join you for a game? Or maybe you want to brush up on your skills before heading into a major event? Whatever the case, you'll want to take a serious look at Grandmaster Chess Tournament, an utterly complete chess game that will challenge you at every turn.

Starting with the Exhibition Match

While some other titles may offer fancier animations or extravagant graphics, this is not what this game is meant to offer. This offering is much more for the purists of the genre. The graphics are simple yet remarkably effective. Each of the pieces has been beautifully crafted but not distracting. Along the right side of the screen, you are providing with a detailed history of moves, so you can recount the game up until that point.

Choosing to start a local match, you will be presented with the opportunity to choose between six different difficulty levels. Starting with the easiest, the levels are as follows:

  • Monkey Style
  • Child Level
  • Easy Adult Level
  • Medium Level
  • Hard Level
  • Grandmaster

As you might imagine, the Grandmaster level is not for the feint of heart. If you happen to have a buddy around, there is also the option to enjoy a two-player game, complete with all the options and features of the single-player game. It's arguable whether a human player is more or less predictable than a computer-controlled counterpart.

Earning Trophies through Championships

When you're ready to tackle some of the best, you'll want to dive into the series of tournaments and championships that are offered in this game. You will play an increasingly difficult stable of computer-controlled players, each with his or her own personality and playing style. You earn points through these series of matches and are awarded a trophy if you rank well after a set number of games.

During each of the matches, the on-screen interface will lend you a bit of a helping hand. Rules are strictly enforced, so you will not be able to put yourself in check, for example. Further still, clicking on any of your pieces will highlight available landing locations. If you wait a few moments, a hint will be provided that suggests a recommended move. Some hints are better than others.

Are You a Grandmaster?

While you could certainly use this title as a training ground to improve your skills in chess, it's quite clear that it was developed with the enthusiast in mind. Even at the "Easy Adult Level" of difficulty, most novice players will experience quite the challenge. This is great, because it provides lots of room to grow and mature as a player. You don't want a chess game to be too easy. No. You'd much rather be a grandmaster.
